LONDON STUDENTS (of all ages!)
Living and studying in London can be great fun, but it isn't always easy.
We think that London students are screwed twice - by the high and rising cost of our education, and by some of the highest rents in the country.
Tuition fees and top-up fees
The Liberal Democrats are the only mainstream political party to oppose tuition fees and top-up fees. We believe that tuition fees have widened the gap between social classes and worsened the problems of student debt. In return, the Government hasn't raised more money for universities - it has just cut back funds instead.
Ever-higher top-up fees make access to education based on the ability to pay, not the ability to learn.
The Lib Dems have already scrapped fees in Scotland (where we are sharing power in the Scottish Parliament). Let's get them scrapped in England too.
Other campaigns
For LDYS, politics don't stop at the university gates. We have a strong tradition of campaigning against injustice, such as with our campaign to stop homophobic bullying in schools, our opposition to many of the Government's recent attacks on civil liberties, and our international campaign against Europe's last dictatorship.
Student branches
Student Lib Dem societies generally offer a combination of socials, informal discussions, local campaigning, big-name speaker events and debates. Some also get involved in student union elections and the NUS, where they advocate practical policies focusing on issues that concern students. There really is something for everyone!
With the Lib Dems' great intellectual tradition, our passion for education, and our student-friendly policies, it's no surprise that we consistently poll higher among students than any other political party.
