YOUNG WORKERS (18-29 years old)
London attracts hundreds of thousands of young workers and
young professionals from all around the country and from abroad.
The opportunities in London are great, but so too are the challenges.
- Those of us who went to university in the UK now face the
seemingly endless burden of student debt.
- Many of our parents' generation made a fortune on the property
market. But we are forced to rent in shared houses or live
with our parents, in some cases even once we are married and
have kids of our own.
- We can no longer expect a job for life - we're increasingly
commoditised, out-sourceable and otherwise dispensible.
- We no longer have generous final-salary pension schemes
to secure our future. Instead we face a disappearing state
pension and disappointing 'stakeholder' schemes that guarantee
us nothing.
- Although we have often been joined in London by friends
from university/school, and have made new acquaintances at
work, it can be difficult to find people with shared interests.
In short, it's a time of great uncertainty, and we believe
that our concerns aren't currently being addressed by government.
LDYS sees it as crucial that 'twenty-somethings' enter the policy
debate and get politicians to pay attention to us again.
The LDYS London borough network is open to any Lib Dems under
the age of 30 (plus students of any age), and provides you with
a great opportunity to meet like-minded people in your local
area over a cheap dinner and/or drinks, talk politics, sometimes
meet councillors and MPs, and help out the Lib Dems with your
skills and wider experience.
Hundreds of young workers and young professionals across the
country are already involved in our events and campaigns. We
hope that you'll use this site to find out more about what we
believe and what we do, and if you like what you see... join
us.
