YOUNG LEARNERS (18 years old or below)
Often adults claim that young people are no longer interested in politics and that they do not care about the issues facing Britain today. The truth is very different. It's not that young people have ignored politics, but that politicians have ignored young people.
At LDYS we confront this problem head on.
(1) We believe that young people have a right to be heard.
That's why we campaign on issues that young people care passionately about, such as the protecting the environment we'll grow up in, and defending people's human rights at home and abroad.
(2) We believe that if you're good enough, you're old enough.
That's why we involve young people at every level of our organisation. Unlike some other youth parties, our leaders are elected by all members, and include young people of all ages.
(3) We believe that voting makes politicians listen to us.
That's why we support the Votes at Sixteen campaign, fighting to give 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote in all local and national elections.
(4) We believe that young people should discuss big issues.
That's why we run events in Parliament for school pupils, and provide support to Lib Dem candidates in mock elections at school.
(5) We believe that we deserve equal access to education.
That's why we oppose tuition fees and "top-up fees" for university students, and call for the return of student grants, so that access to universities is based on our ability to learn, not our ability to pay.
Lots of 15-18 year olds are already involved in our events and campaigns. We hope that you'll use this site to find out more about what we believe and what we do, and if you like what you see... join us.
